Last night at SunTrust Park Freddie Freeman got the crowd excited in the first inning with a solo home run that went to the 2nd deck. Unfortunately for the Braves, this would be the highlight of the game offensively. The Braves did manage a small rally in the 7th inning but it was not enough to take the lead away from the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are one of the worst teams in baseball, but they have had the Braves number this season.
The Braves got some good news last night as Matt Kemp was cleared to play baseball finally coming off the disabled list. However irony took control of the Braves yet again in 2017 and now Johan Camargo is now headed to the disabled list. Last night Camargo was taking the field at the top of the first inning and did his signature hopping and skipping over the first base line, but last night 1 of his spikes must have gotten caught in the grass. It was a scary sight to watch Camargo’s leg snap and Camargo immediately went down in pain and had to be helped off the field by his teammates and coaches. This will open the door for Dansby Swanson as he is expected to be called up from AAA Gwinnett to fill the shortstop role in Atlanta.
The injury bug has plagued the 2017 Braves with injuries to Freddie Freeman, Matt Kemp, Johan Camargo, and others. The Braves have not had their starting lineup since early in the season and this has been very stressful for Braves manager Brian Snitker and the Braves front office and their fans. All professional baseball teams deal with injuries throughout the season so the Braves struggles this season can not just be blamed on that 1 reason. The Braves have continued to bring in new players from the minor leagues and their starting pitching staff has not been what was expected earlier this season. Julio Teheran continues to struggle at SunTrust Park and his struggles continued last night. R.A. Dickey and Mike Foltynewicz seem to be the most reliable starting pitchers in the Braves lineup up, but Sean Newcomb is finding his groove at the major league level.
The Braves will send Sean Newcomb to the pitching mound tonight before they start a weekend series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Johan Camargo’s injury was not as bad as it looked. Instead of being done for the year, Camargo is only expected to be on the disabled list for a couple of weeks. Camargo has been a very exciting player for the Braves this season and teammates and the Atlanta fans will miss him in the field and the batter’s box.
Hopefully, Dansby Swanson can show the Braves fans why he was the Braves number one prospect coming into Spring Training. Swanson has another opportunity in the big leagues and it will be fun to watch him at shortstop for the next couple of weeks as he looks to take back his starting role for the Braves. If the Braves goal for 207 is to play.500 baseball then they just need to focus on 1 game at a time and overcome the different obstacles. GO BRAVES!!!!!
