With 2017 season over, the offseason and free agency will begin soon. One of the biggest names you’ll hear about this offseason is Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton. The Miami Marlins, led by Derek Jeter, are looking to rebuild and start fresh with the Fish. Giancarlo Stanton is expected to make just under $300 million in the next 11 seasons so one way for the Marlins to dump a lot of money is by trading Stanton now. Marlins fans won’t like the move but what Jeter and his group are doing is the start the process of making the Marlins great again. With Stanton come off an MVP type season, the Marlins will surely get a lot for the slugger. Here are a few trades that could work out for the Miami Marlins if they do traded Stanton.
New York Yankees
Trading Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees would not only make the Yankees one of the scariest lineups in baseball, but they will probably be the favorites to win the 2018 World Series. Aaron Judge and Stanton in the same lineup would be very dangerous but it will surely cost the Yanks some of their best players and prospects. Here are potential trade that could work for both teams.
New York Yankees receive: OF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins receive: RHP Luis Severino, RHP Sonny Gray, OF Clint Frazier and two prospects (RHP Chance Adams & LHP Nestor Cortes)
This a really solid deal for both teams. Giancarlo gets to play in Yankee Stadium and probably will come close to Barry Bonds’ record. The Yankees will have the best power hitting team in the MLB with Judge and Stanton. The Yankees would lose a lot in pitching as Luis Severino is an All-Star, Sonny Gray is a very solid pitcher, Clint Frazier is an outfield prospect, Chance Adams is a top prospect who could get called up next season and Nestor Cortes is an underrated minor leaguer that throws strikes and doesn’t allow many runs. This would make the Marlins rotation a whole lot better than last season and they improve their farm system with Adams and Cortes until they get called up.
Los Angeles Dodgers
If Giancarlo was to be traded, the Los Angeles Dodgers would definitely be one of the teams he would love to play for. Being from California, Stanton was a Dodgers fan growing up and would love to play for his hometown team. The Dodgers don’t have the best prospect but there are some MLB starters who could on the move if Giancarlo was to be traded to LA.
Los Angeles Dodgers receive: OF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins receive: RHP Alex Wood, RHP Ross Stripling, and four prospects (OF Alex Verdugo, RHP Yadier Alvarez, RHP Trevor Oaks and RHP Jordan Sheffield)
Giancarlo Stanton going to the Dodgers makes them one of the most powerful lineups with him and Cody Bellinger. The Dodgers would need to drop some of their top arms like Alex Wood and some of their top prospects like Alex Verdugo. Yadier Alvarez would be a nice addition to the Marlins as he is a Cuban ballplayer and is a top minor league prospect. The Miami Marlins are in dire need of pitching and adding Wood to the rotation and Striping to the bullpen makes their pitching staff a lot better.
St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals are always a playoff contender that either makes it or just misses it by a few games. Having Giancarlo Stanton makes the Cardinals a World Series contender instead of a playoff contender. The Cardinals have a lot of really good prospects that could come to Miami and make an immediate impact. They have a lot of good young arms and a particular outfielder who has been already called up.
St. Louis Cardinals receive: OF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins receive: RHP Carlos Martinez, RHP Luke Weaver and five prospects (OF Harrison Bader, SS Delvin Perez, RHP Junior Fernandez, RHP Johan Oviedo and RHP Ronnie Williams)
This trade might work better for the St. Louis Cardinals than the Miami Marlins. While the Marlins are snagging their ace, they are picking up the best power hitter in baseball. The Marlins would also get one of their top pitching prospects in Luke Weaver. Former Florida Gators Harrison Bader plays in right for Stanton. Delvin Perez is their just in case J.T. Riddle doesn’t work out. Junior Fernandez is a 20 year old flamethrower. He has been clocked at 100 mph and could get called up in two years. Johan Oviedo is another international prospect that throws hard. The 6’6” Cuban tops out at 96 mph and he is also 20 years old. Ronnie Williams was drafted in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft and could be a nice relief pitcher for the Miami Marlins in the future.
Boston Red Sox
Giancarlo Stanton in the Fenway Park would a nightmare for the MLB. The Boston Red Sox must make a big move if they want to return to the World Series. The Yankees are looking very good and Stanton to Boston instead of New York would make a lot of Yankee fans nervous. The Red Sox have a lot of top prospects and outfielders that could make their way to Miami if Stanton does get traded to the Sox.
Boston Red Sox receive: OF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins receive: OF Andrew Benintendi, LHP Eduardo Rodriguez RHP Heath Hembree and three prospects (LHP Jay Groome, SS CJ Chatham and RHP Hildemaro Requena)
Stanton definitely does make their offense a lot better but they do lose one of the brightest young stars in the MLB in Andrew Benintendi. Eduardo Rodriguez would improve the Marlins starting rotation. Heath Hembree makes a nice impact in the bullpen. Jay Groome is one of the top lefty prospects in baseball. CJ Chatham could be a starting shortstop for the Fish is Riddle isn’t as good as some think he could be. Hildemaro Requena is a young but talent pitcher that will improve the Marlins farm system and become a solid relief pitcher in the future.
