Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators hope they have found their replacement for Army All-American QB Matt Corral. The Under Armour All-American and former Ohio State commit Emory Jones has flipped to Florida. This is a huge signing for the Gators as he is one of the top recruits in the country and a top five quarterback in the 2018 class. Jones could make an immediate impact with the Gators since they haven’t had solid quarterback play since the Tim Tebow era. Here are three reasons why landing four-star QB Emory Jones is vital for the Florida Gators.
Emory Jones is an early enrollee
One reason that Matt Corral was a big deal for Gator fans was because he was an early enrollee. The good news is that Emory Jones is also an early enrollee. What that means is, he will enroll at the University of Florida in January and will be able to compete for the starting quarterback job in spring camp. Jones will fight for the starting job with Feleipe Franks, Kyle Trask and others. He will also play in the spring game which is a big test for players fighting for a starting position. Jones will also be able to learn the playbook for a longer period, which is a big advantage Vs those whom don’t enroll early.
Emory Jones fits Dan Mullen’s offense
Emory Jones is a perfect fit for the Dan Mullen’s offense just like he was perfect for Urban Meyer’s offense. Mullen runs a spread offense that makes the defense defend all eleven guys on the field. Mullen also prefers having a dual-threat quarterback who can sling it and run if he has space. Jones has an absolute cannon for an arm and he’s also a good runner. The perfect way to describe Jones is to call him a pocket passer who can run well. Jones’ skillset in Dan Mullen’s offense is one of the reason the All-American decided that Florida would be a better fit for him.
Florida desperately needs a QB
Ever since Tebow graduated from Florida, the Gators offense has never been the same. Florida has struggled to find a quarterback that can take their offense to the next level. Emory Jones could be that quarterback Florida fans have been praying for. Emory Jones is a 6’3” 200 pound prototypical Dan Mullen dual-threat quarterback. His biggest attribute is his football IQ. Jones is a very careful and makes sound decisions with the ball in his hands. He has a cannon for an arm and is not afraid to thread the needle and take some deep shots. Jones has great throwing mechanics. He’s also dangerous outside the pocket and throwing on the run. Jones ran a 4.67 40-yard dash and can really hurt defenses with his legs. He will need to add some solid weight but that shouldn’t be a problem with Florida’s strength and conditioning coach Nick Savage.
