Since the Chiefs rested most of their starters in the preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans, most casual fans wouldn’t see the hype surrounding the game on Thursday night. That couldn’t be further from the truth, as Kansas City fans definitely had something to be excited about in quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The first-round draft pick made his first start at Arrowhead Stadium, and he did not disappoint.
The Mahomes – Robinson Connection
Anybody who has watched Mahomes for the last few weeks understands that this guy possesses some serious talent not only with his powerful arm but also his mobility. The rookie made not one, not two, but three impressive downfield completions to Demarcus Robinson.
The first throw occurred near the end of the first quarter, when Mahomes connected with Robinson on a deep ball for 53 yards.

The second one, perhaps the most impressive, came in the second quarter. Mahomes executed an incredible throw running to his right that went for 46 yards.

The Mahomes-Robinson connection happened for a third time, when the two linked up for a 28 yard touchdown with the clock winding down in the first half. Could this be a dynamic duo for the future?

Mahomes ended the day 9/16 for 183 yards and a touchdown.
Room For Improvement
As exciting as it was to watch Patrick Mahomes light it up down the field, there is always room for improvement. The rookie still needs to develop a greater presence in the pocket, that way he isn’t forced to make throws off his back foot or on the run frequently. He also threw to near-interceptions, one of which was certainly the result of throwing on the run. That being said, it’s a learning process. Mahomes will learn a lot under the teaching of Alex Smith, and it’s absurd to assume that the kid is anywhere close to a finished product. Although he isn’t a finished product, his raw talent leaves Chiefs fans filled with excitement at the endless possibilities of their future quarterback.
