On Monday night, the Florida Gators landed one of the top uncommitted 2021 prospects in the state of Florida. 2021 middle infielder Jake Fox announced on Twitter that he had verbally committed to the University of Florida. On Perfect Game, Fox is the 487th ranked prospect and the 81st ranked shortstop in the country. Fox is a 6’1” 180 pound left-handed hitting shortstop out of Lakeland Christian High School. In his sophomore season, Fox batted .525 with seven doubles, one home run, sixteen stolen bases and a 1.256 OPS. Florida has 14 commits in their 2021 recruiting class. With Fox’s commitment, Florida moved up to third in the 2021 recruiting class rankings passing Vanderbilt. Here is what Jake Fox had to say about the University of Florida and his recruitment.
Sport News Magazine: What led you to commit to the Florida Gators?
Jake Fox: A bunch of things came into play with my commitment to Florida. I wanted to play under a great coaching staff and play in one of the best programs in the country while playing in the best conference in the nation. I just felt Florida was the best fit for me and it’s close to home so my family can see me play.
SNM: During the recruiting process, what other schools were recruiting you?
JF: Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, East Carolina, UCF, USF, NC State, South Carolina, Duke, West Virginia, Tulane and Jacksonville.
SNM: What were the top schools before committing to UF?
JF: Auburn, Clemson and Florida.
SNM: What was it about each school that grabbed your attention?
JF: I unofficially visited Clemson and Auburn and loved everything about each campus. Also, the coaches were awesome people and I built a relationship with them. They seemed like they really cared about me individually. For Florida, I had grown up around the campus going to baseball and basketball games so, I’ve always been interested in Florida. Over the summer, I built a relationship with the coaching staff and just felt super comfortable with Florida.
SNM: What position is Florida recruiting you to play?
JF: Middle infield. Primarily shortstop.
SNM: Which Florida coach did you have the most communication with?
JF: I talked to both Coach O’Sullivan and Coach Jeroloman a lot.
SNM: What was their message to you about UF?
JF: That I’m not promised anything and I need to come and perform how they and I know I can. Just that if my goal is to play professional baseball that Florida is the place for me. They also said they weren’t only going to make me a better ball player but a better man as well.
SNM: When did you receive your offer from Florida?
JF: It was during my week in Atlanta with the 16u Chet Lemon Juice team. It was around July 10th.
SNM: What was your reaction to Florida’s offer?
JF: It was a great feeling and I was very excited about that offer. That offer just felt different I guess because I’ve just always grown up talking about playing at Florida and been around UF my whole life.
SNM: Now that you’ve committed to the Florida Gators, have you officially shut down your recruitment?
SNM: This week is also game week for the Florida Gators football team. What’s your score prediction between the Florida Gators vs. the Miami Hurricanes?
JF: Florida on top by at least 15.
