On June 22nd, the Florida Gators baseball program landed their first 2023 commit in their class. The 2023 shortstop/right-handed pitcher out of Berkley Prep, Cade Kurland, committed to the University of Florida. Kurland is already one of the top prospects in his class. As a pitcher, he has a fastball that sits in the low 80s and has touched 85 mph. His best secondary pitch his is power curveball and has some feel to his changeup. As a shortstop, Kurland has good footwork and pretty strong arm. He’ll likely be able to stay at shortstop at the next level. Kurland has good bat speed and has a really sound swing for a prospect in his class. Here is what the newest Florida Gator baseball commit had to say about his recruitment and the Florida Gators.
Sport News Magazine: When did you received an offer from Florida?
Cade Kurland: Friday night on the 21st.
SNM: Who was the coach that offered you and what did they say?
CK: I spoke with Coach Bell. He said that he wanted me to play baseball for the University of Florida and offered me.
SNM: What position is Florida recruiting you to play?
CK: SS and RHP
SNM: What about the University of Florida made you want to commit so early?
CK: I wanted to attend a top academic school, play elite level college baseball and compete for championships. Also, I will be a 4th generation legacy. My grandfather Bruce Culpeper and uncle Brad Culpepper attended and played football at Florida. My mother and great grandfather also attended UF. In fact, I will be the 23rd member in my family to attend Florida.
SNM: Being a Florida legacy, was Florida the school you’ve always wanted to go to?
CK: I really didn’t have a destination in mind other than playing at the very best academic university and baseball program in the country. Academics are very important to me so, I had a few schools in mind that fit both those characteristics and Florida was certainly one of them.
SNM: How does it feel to be a Florida Gator commit?
CK: I’m very excited. It’s great to be a Florida Gator.
SNM: When or if you make to Florida, what will be your goals there?
