Sporting KC kicked off their 100th MLS sellout match against FC Dallas with a bang, shutting down their opponents in a 2-0 victory on Saturday night. In the club’s three previous meetings this year, twice in MLS play and once in the quarterfinals of the US Open Cup, the series was tied with a win, loss, and a draw.
However, SKC took the series lead with a breakthrough goal that was a right-footed volley by Diego Rubio from a Graham Zusi corner. It was Rubio’s second goal of the season. Sporting’s defense stifled Dallas in the first half, allowing only one shot on goal, definitely setting the pace for the rest of the match.
The dagger didn’t come until extra time, when substitute Gerso Fernandes blasted a rocket into the left corner of the net. After grabbing three points, Sporting KC (10-5-10) jumped into the top spot in the Western Conference with 40 points.
Sporting KC Extends Home Winning Streak
SKC extended its home unbeaten streak at Children’s Mercy Park to 22 games, matching the fourth longest in MLS history. Next week they will have yet another tough matchup, traveling to Houston to play the Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium next Saturday.
