Sporting Kansas City grabbed a 2-1 victory against the Los Angeles Galaxy Saturday night, their first win at the Stub Hub Center since 2010. To add perspective, they were still called the Kansas City Wizards at that time.
These three points were vital to SKC as they widen their lead atop the Western Conference to five points over the Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas.
SKC struck first in the 22nd minute with a rather fortuitous goal for Roger Espinoza. Galaxy goalkeeper Clement Diop went to punch Espinoza’s shot from distance and deflected the ball into the back of the net. However, Sporting’s second goal via Ike Opara was an absolute stunner. After a ball from Matt Besler took a big bounce inside the 18th, Opara executed a perfect bicycle kick past the goalie in the 35th minute.
Dave Romney of the Galaxy was able to grab one back in the 77th after a save from Tim Melia that resulted in a putback for the LA defender. Sporting KC was able to hang on for all three points, a huge victory on the road for a club who looks to separate themselves from the rest of the western conference.
Midfielder Benny Feilhaber had to be helped off the field in the 61st minute after a scary foul from Galaxy defender Nathan Smith. Initial reports from the training staff suggest that Feilhaber had a bruised left shin and injured left ankle.
