The US Open Cup final is now officially set. Sporting Kansas City will host the New York Red Bulls after the Red Bulls knocked off FC Cincinnati 3-2 in extra time of the semi-final match. The game will be played at Children’s Mercy Park on September 20th at 8 p.m.
The Red Bulls were able to come back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half and send the match into extra time, where Bradley Wright-Phillips scored the go-ahead goal to put New York in front and subsequently send his club to the final. It was a heartbreaking loss for FC Cincinnati, who were looking to be the first non-MLS team to make it to the Open Cup Final since the Charleston Battery in 2008. Charleston would go on to lose that match 2-1 to D.C. United.
This will be the second US Open Cup final for the Red Bulls, who fell to the Chicago Fire 2003 in their only other appearance. Former SKC players, Aurelien Collin and Sal Zizzo, will likely be available against their old club.
Sporting KC will be playing in their fourth final in club history and they are third in the last six seasons. Sporting has an impeccable track record, as they have never lost a US Open Cup final, winning the title in 2004, 2012, and 2015.
