The Miami Marlins continue to stay as one of the hottest teams in baseball. The Miami Marlins (66-63) complete the sweep against the San Diego Padres (57-73) as the Fish win 6-2. Giancarlo Stanton has been the biggest reason why the Fish have been on fire in the second half of the season. He has continued to drive the ball out of the yard and do it at an impressive rate. The Fish continue to climb up in the wild card standings and make a push for the postseason.
San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres couldn’t be happier to get out of Miami as the Marlins were easily the more dominant team. Clayton Richard got the start and the loss for the Padres as the started billing on the runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Richard threw seven innings allowing five runs, two walks and seven strikeouts. While Clayton Richard wasn’t at his best, his offense didn’t produce any runs. The two runs the Padres scored were off a two-run home run by Richard in the top of the fifth inning. Leadoff hitter Matt Szczur went 2-3 with a double and Yangervis Solarte went 1-3 with a base on ball.
The Marlins are on fire! Dan Straily was handed the ball as he tried to deliver a win for the Fish. Straily pitched six innings allowing six hits, two runs, three walks and five strikeouts. Kyle Barraclough got the win after throwing a perfect 8th inning. Barraclough’s record is now 5-1. The Marlins bats were awake as they were able to stay hot. Giancarlo Stanton continues to tear the cover off the ball as he went 3-3 with a double and his 50th home run of the season. Stanton is the first National League player with 50 home runs since Prince Fielder in 2007. Dee Gordon went 2-4 with two runs score. Christian Yelich went 1-4 with a triple and scored on an error. Mike Aviles went 2-3 and Derek Dietrich went 1-4 with a solo shot.
The Marlins will extend their four game winning streak as they travel to play the NL East leading Washington Nationals. Jose Urena will get the start in the series opener against Washington. The Nationals will start Max Scherzer as he has fully recovered from his neck injury. You can watch this game on Monday night at 7:05 pm EST on Fox Sports Florida and the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.
